Understanding European Cultures With Language Learning
Every September 26 marks the European Day of Languages an observance the Council of Europe and the European Union have run annually since 2001, when it launched during the European Year of Languages. The goal is simple: draw attention to Europe’s remarkable linguistic diversity and encourage people everywhere to keep learning new languages throughout their lives.
That diversity is bigger than most people realise. Europe is home to more than 200 indigenous languages, and the European Union alone recognizes 24 official ones. As the Council of Europe puts it, language learning today is “not a cultural luxury, but a political necessity” a way of building understanding across borders, not just a line on a CV.
