A Memorable Trip to China: From Beijing to Shanghai

China is one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations, with over 5,000 years of history, iconic landmarks, and breathtaking landscapes. From ancient imperial palaces to futuristic skylines, each city tells a unique story.

One of our awesome staff at Eton Institute, shares her unforgettable journey through Beijing, Xi’an, Guilin, and Shanghai — a trip filled with culture, history, and scenic beauty.

Beijing – Where History Lives

Our first stop was Tian’an Men Square, the vast political heart of China. Just a short walk away stood the Forbidden City, officially the Palace Museum, completed in 1420. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was home to 24 emperors for nearly 500 years. Its architecture is rich in symbolism, rooted in the yin-yang philosophy and the auspicious number nine.

On our second day, we visited the Great Wall of China during cherry blossom season, coinciding with the Qing Ming Jie (Tomb Sweeping Day). We explored the Mutianyu section, famous for its scenic cable car rides and fewer crowds than Badaling.

We also explored the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, two of Beijing’s most serene and culturally rich landmarks.

Xi’an – Ancient Capital and Home of the Terracotta Army

A sleeper train took us to Xi’an, where the Terracotta Army — guarding Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb — became the highlight of our two-day visit. Cycling 13.75 km along the city walls offered a perfect blend of exercise and history.

We also visited the Bell Tower at the city’s center, a vantage point to appreciate Xi’an’s historic architecture.

Guilin – Rice Terraces and River Magic

A two-hour flight took us to Guilin, known for its mist-covered Dragon Backbone Rice Terraces in Ping An. The climb rewarded us with breathtaking views of “The Seven Stars with a Moon” plateau.

We also cruised along the Li River to Yangshuo, surrounded by karst mountains and lush countryside. Guilin’s name — “Forest of Osmanthus trees” — perfectly reflects the city’s fragrant charm.

Shanghai – Where Old Meets New

Our journey ended in Shanghai, a dazzling blend of tradition and modernity. We experienced the MagLev Train reaching 301 kph, explored the business hub of Pudong, and strolled along The Bund.

We also visited Yu Gardens, the Jade Buddha Temple, and nearby Suzhou, known for its classical gardens and historic Grand Canal.
