Our German courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the same scale used by German visa, university and employer requirements. Not sure where you are? Ask us for a free placement test.

A0–A1

Beginner German

Start from zero: introduce yourself, ask simple questions and handle everyday situations. A1 is the level most spouse visas ask for.

Elementary German

Talk about familiar topics, your work and your routine, and understand short everyday texts.

Intermediate German

Communicate independently at work and while travelling, and follow the main points of clear conversations.

Upper Intermediate German

Speak fluently and spontaneously with native speakers, the level many employers and nursing roles ask for.

Advanced German

Use German flexibly for study and professional life, the level most German-taught degrees ask for.

Proficient German

Understand virtually everything you hear or read and express yourself precisely.

Moving to Germany

German for Visas, Study and Work in Germany

Many of our students learn German to move to Germany. These are the levels the main routes typically ask for. Requirements change and can differ by embassy, employer and university, so always confirm the current rules with the German mission or institution you are applying to.

Spouse and family reunion

Spouses joining a partner in Germany usually need to show basic German (A1). German missions list the ÖSD Zertifikat A1 among the accepted certificates, alongside Goethe and telc.

A1–B2

Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

Applicants without a fully recognised qualification need basic German (A1) or English (B2). In the points system, German at A2, B1 or B2 earns extra points.

Nursing and healthcare

Recognition as a nurse in Germany generally requires German at B2. Some recognition-partnership routes let you start working at A2.

University (German-taught degrees)

Most German-taught degrees ask for C1-level proof such as DSH-2 or TestDaF. Many universities accept ÖSD C1 or C2, but check your university’s list first.

It took me around 2 months and a half, I did it online and it was a great experience. My tutors Tr. Bellen and Tr. Ismail were fantastic, they offered support and the classes were organized live and fun. However, it can be intense in a sense that I had to study and forget what I knew about teaching because CELTA has different techniques. We where given instructions before the course started on what to expect by solving or going through 3 modules which where very helpful. I chose to take CELTA at Eton because its affordable. Is the ÖSD certificate accepted for a German visa?

What German level do I need to work or study in Germany?
