Star Wars Day: Why “May the Fourth Be With You” Is Celebrated Worldwide

Star Wars Day: The Force Is Strong With This One

Every year on May 4th, Star Wars fans across the world come together to celebrate one of the most iconic pop-culture events of all time — Star Wars Day. But have you ever wondered how the famous phrase “May the Fourth Be With You” came to be?

Surprisingly, the origins of Star Wars Day have less to do with a galaxy far, far away — and more to do with British politics.

The Real Origin of “May the Fourth Be With You”

The phrase dates back to May 4th, 1979, when Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. To mark the historic occasion, the London Evening News published a congratulatory advertisement that read:

“May The Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”

The clever wordplay was a direct nod to the now-legendary Star Wars quote:
“May the Force be with you.”

At the time, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (released in 1977) had already become a global phenomenon, captivating audiences with its intergalactic storytelling, imaginative worlds, and fictional languages. What started as a witty newspaper headline would eventually spark a worldwide celebration.

From Wordplay to Worldwide Celebration

While the phrase existed for decades, Star Wars Day officially took shape in 2011, when the Toronto Underground Cinema hosted a Star Wars film marathon and costume contest on May 4th.

The event gained massive attention, and soon after, businesses, brands, and fan communities around the world embraced the idea. Merchandise launches, themed events, social media campaigns, and fan tributes followed — and Star Wars Day was born.

Today, May 4th is celebrated globally as the unofficial Star Wars Day, uniting fans of all ages in appreciation of the franchise’s enduring legacy.

Why Star Wars Still Resonates Across Cultures

One of the reasons Star Wars remains so influential is its ability to transcend cultures, languages, and generations. From heroic journeys to moral dilemmas, the saga speaks to universal human experiences — often through entirely new worlds and invented languages.

While learning a fictional language like Huttese or Shyriiwook may not be practical, the fascination with language, culture, and communication is very real.

May the Fourth — and Your Language Journey — Be With You

Feeling inspired by the rich cultures and languages of the Star Wars universe? While you may not be able to converse with a Wookiee, you can challenge yourself by learning a real foreign language — an adventure just as rewarding.

Whether it’s for travel, work, or cultural exploration, learning a new language opens doors to new worlds — no lightsaber required.

Happy Star Wars Day!
May the Fourth Be With You.
